I'm not sure, therefore, that anyone could describe peanuts as persnickety.

According to the Urban dictionary this word does have a new meaning as outlined below, but I still don't see how you could apply the words to peanuts.

Previously an adjective that now is a verb. It is the new way to describe making out or hooking up, even canoodling without being too obvious about it. It never goes farther than second base. Usually persnickety happens on a one time basis or with someone you aren't that interested in. It also means to canoodle, or to spoon and kiss etc.
